Since 2017, shes hosted Drop the Mic on TBS, which features celebrities facing off in rap. Additional third-party AirPlay devices from Denon, Libratone, Marantz, and more are due later in 2018, and we expect that they will be compatible with Airfoil as well. Major Enhancement: Airfoil now supports streaming to Sonos's AirPlay compatible devices, including the Sonos One, Beam, Playbase, and the second generation Play:5! There are more than 25 alternatives to AirParrot for a variety of platforms, including Mac, Windows, Android, iPhone and iPad. Note that, in the UK at least, you can’t distribute audio around an office or public space without a commercial license.īuild 5.8 is a minor update (see changelog for more): AirParrot is described as Screen and file sharing app to share content wirelessly to media servers and is a screen mirroring app in the remote work & education category. You can also send audio to the AppleTV and even other desktop computers around your home. You can now use the tool to stream your desktop-based music to your iPhone or iPod Touch, meaning you do not need to keep your tracks on your iPhone, but store them on your computer hard drive instead. All it does is intercept the audio and output this via your Airport Express rather than your computer speakers.Īirfoil goes much further than this. Airfoil is a fantastic little software device that enables you to hear your audio tracks through your Airport Express, from any Windows application that’s capable of playing audio. For example, this is one of our biggest issues with Spotify as we miss being able to hear our tracks through our hi-fi at the other side of our living room.įear not, you can still get the best of both worlds without requiring iTunes. Problem is, outside of iTunes it’s very difficult to find tools that will support the Airport Express. Ideal if you’re busy on a weekend cleaning the house and you want to hear some music whilst you move around from room to room. Indeed, if you have more than one Airport Express device, you can stream the same track around your house, meaning you can hear audio in your kitchen, move up to your bedroom and hear the same track. As one who doesn't want to spend any more energy on vigilance and housekeeping than absolutely necessary, I tend to prefer accepting the occasional unfortunate outcome like this to having to worry about whether a third-party vendor is actually a bad actor in disguise. The Apple Airport Express system enables you to quickly and easily link a wireless device to your audio system or directly to your speakers if they are self-powered, then stream audio from iTunes to the speakers. It's safer, but also stifles innovation and flexibility somewhat. It's the old walled garden argument again. On one hand you get a reasonable degree of confidence that security and usability guidelines are observed, but on the other hand the third party may be restricted from providing features and functions that are outside the scope of what Apple provides for in its terms. In general I more agree with your sentiment than disagree, but I'd add the qualifier that Apple considers controlling the ecosystem via licensing to be a "solid engineering reason." That's a double-edged sword. It's been my observation that there are almost always solid engineering reasons for the things Apple does, not devious mustache-twirling. I'm also dubious that Apple introduced this change just to screw with Rogue Amoeba and the like.
